Historical Birding Data

Welcome!  You've found the historical database area of my website!

I find historical data to be helpful for analysis and future planning and I am making mine available to you
for such purposes.  I hope you find the information useful.

I have kept records of my bird sightings since 1974.  I use a set of custom programs to print, parse, sort
and analyze the data into various reports and I have included three such reports herein.  Keep in mind
that these are mostly accounts of a weekend birder (with an occasional birding trip thrown in).

Yes, I know there are anomalies in the data such as old bird names and shortened variations.  I use
"Rough-winged Swallow" instead of "Northern Rough-winged Swallow" because the later is just too
darned long!  So shoot me, I can't spell "Wigeon"!

And why do I keep the variations of juncos separate?  I can't even answer that except to suggest that
someday data on races might be important.  I have also deleted apostrophes in bird names to make
programming tasks easier.

I promise to correct these over time but I'm not above help.  If you see something that doesn't look right
or is a flat out error, please let me know via email.  I'll try to correct obvious mistakes in future upgrades.

All data may not be available when the web site goes live.

Chronological Data

This data is a list of every birding trip I have taken starting in 1974 with a list of birds observed, the
number seen, the specific location with the date, time, weather, temperature and other observers.  It is
presented in chronological sequence (by date).

Chronological Trip Reports

Sort By Species Output Reports

This may be the more valuable data for planning purposes.  For all species on my life list, I have printed
a report of every date and location that I have seen them from 1974 to the present.

American Dipper
Northern Shovelor
Ponderosa Pine - Mt. Bigelow, Tucson, AZ - 05/30/2004

My Lists

This section contains various lists such as my life list, when and where each species was seen, annual
lists of all species observed, when and where, and a few select state lists along with first date observed,
when and where and my yard list.   Initially, all of my data may not be active or available, but I will add it
over time.

Life, Annual and State Lists

The data in this section is arranged by date of first observation of each species and the location it was
observed.

I can't even answer that one except in the hopes that someday they'll be split out again or that
information on races might be important.  I have also deleted apostrophes in bird names to make
programming tasks easier.

I promise to correct these over time but I'm not above help.  If you see something that doesn't look right
or is a flat out error, please let me know via email.  I'll try to correct obvious mistakes in future upgrades.

Life List

A life list is a personal thing.  You may or may not find useful information here.

Annual Lists

Annual lists, again, are somewhat personal, but with the species listed in order of first sighting each
year, along with the date and location, it might point you to a specific date or location of interest in the
Chronological data.

State Lists

I find state lists convey a little more about commonality.  The most common, abundant and easy to find
species should be at the beginning of the list, while those at the end of the list should be the rarest,
hardest to find, seasonal or completely unexpected species.  I have only included those states for which
I have enough data to be marginally  meaningful.  None of these will likely challenge the American
Birding Association thresholds for state lists!

Arizona State First Date List

This list is another way of looking at the state list but includes the first date each year that each every
species is observed within that state.  I find it handy to tally state totals, to compare year to year and to
gauge commonality or rarity of species.

Yard List

Everybody's got one, so why not offer up mine to look at and compare?  Here's my yard list for 13535
South Sundown Ranch Road in Vail, roughly at the intersection of Route 83 and I-10.  My home is in the
new Windmill Ridge development behind the new fire station.  I've lived at this location since August of
2007.  The desert here is fairly sparse but the washes are lined with thick mesquite, foothills palo verde,
desert hackberry, yucca, hedgehogs, barrel cacti and the like.
