Introduction

Welcome to my photo section!  Actually, this is just a page front linking you to four other pages, a page for
rare bird photos and documentation, a page for all other birds and bird photo sets, a third for any type of
material that may be of interest such as Arizona landscapes, single bird photos, weather, flowers, cacti
and the like and a photo archives page.

I like to take photographs, but you'll find I'm not a professional.  I hope the photos I do present enhance
your experience here and tempt you to visit this awe-inspiring region of our country.  Check back often, as
I update photos throughout the site on a semi-regular basis.

Rare Bird Photos

This link will take you to my photo page reserved for rare birds.  This includes strays from south of the
border, from anywhere outside of Arizona or species of rarity or scarcity of numbers.

Other Bird Photos

When the bird isn't a rarity, I've reserved a second page for photo sets of interest.

Miscellaneous Subject Photos

When the photo of interest doesn't fit into either of the above two categories, I have offered them for
viewing on this third photo page.  Subjects here include landscapes, weather, people, habitats, sunsets,
critters, plants, cacti and single bird photos.

Photo Equipment

For basic trail and landscape photography I currently carry a Canon A 1000 IS 10.1 MP digital camera.  It's
sturdy, uses standard rechargeable AAA batteries and fits easily into a shirt pocket.  The images are
actually quite good as web content.

My landscape camera is Canon EOS 5D 12.8 MP digital body.  It's pictures are highly detailed with
excellent color saturation.  I like that it features a full-frame sensor to take advantage of wide angle and
other landscape lenses.  I use Canon's EF-L
24-105 mm zoom lens with the EOS 5d body.  This f4 lens
is adaptable to a wide range of lighting conditions.

My birding camera is a new Canon EOS 50D 15.1 MP digital body.  I'm in love with this affordable APS-C
sensor camera with a 1.6 crop factor (adding 1.6 X to telephoto focal lengths).  The detail is amazing and
it's easy to use after several years of using a Canon EOS 20D body.  I team this warrior with Canon's EF-L
100-400 mm zoom lens (f4.5 - f5.6) with image stabilization.  This is an excellent all around lens though
it's focal length range under 300 is wasted on me (I almost always have it pulled out to it's full length).  It
is affectionately known as the "dust trumpet" for pulling artifacts into the sensor box, but the 50D's
automatic cleaning has resolved this issue.  The bigger unfortunate here is the weight of the lens.  I rarely
take this rig out for hikes.

I use a Bogen-Manfrotto tripod and monopod for most photo situations and usually either use Canon's
wired remote or a third-party wireless remote.  I
personally do not like taking flash photos and will usually
forgo a photo in favor of NOT using a flash
(only because I have no idea what I'm doing!).  I have no
preference for what other photographers do and this ensures I'll never actually be a professional
photographer (!).
